While there is an ongoing debate on what the best way is to give children quality education, many parents believe that home schooling is the right choice. It is estimated that around 3% of American children today are home-schooled students. A number of successful celebrities were homeschoolers. Keep on reading and find out who they are.
Hilary Duff
Duff is an actress, singer-songwriter, entrepreneur, author — and an icon of her generation. Her acting career took off early in her life and to keep up with the demanding career, Hilary and her parents decided that homeschooling would provide them with the most flexibility–and now she has both the education she needed and the career she dreamed of. She switched to home schooling at age 8.
Ryan Gosling
Ryan Gosling says that as a child he got into trouble at school, was bullied by other students, and was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder). He struggled in school, and by age 10, still couldn’t read. Because of these difficulties, his mother, a single parent, pulled him out to homeschool him. Speaking about it, Gosling told The Guardian: “It gave me a sense of autonomy that I’ve never really lost.”
Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake grew up in the spotlight. As a child, he was a member of The All-New Mickey Mouse Club and also appeared on Star Search. He eventually joined the band N’Sync, being the youngest in the group. This did not leave much time for a “traditional” school experience, and since Justin was only twelve years old when appearing on Star Search, he was home-schooled for middle and junior high school after attending Jeter Elementary School in Tennessee.
Selena Gomez
She attended public schools as an elementary student and through middle school. She confesses to preferring the education she received in traditional school settings, where she felt less isolated from other children. However, she made the transition to home schooling at age 18 to accommodate her acting schedule.
Taylor Swift
A seven-time Grammy award winner, Taylor Swift began her musical career at the age of 14. That didn’t leave much time for school, so the teen star opted to be homeschooled. In 2007, Swift told CMT: “My home schooling has been a great experience. I feel like I’ve had the best senior year possible. It’s awesome that I’ve been able to stay on the same path to graduating that I would’ve been on if I’d stayed in high school. I’m going to graduate this year, and I’m so excited about that. My education was always a big deal to me, and I’m so glad home schooling allowed me to keep it up.”
Justin Bieber
Bieber grew up in Canada, in a low-income neighborhood and was raised by a single mother, Pattie Mallette. As a child, he learned to play several different instruments, (including the guitar), and decided to put a lot of his work on Youtube. In 2007, he was “discovered” by Scooter Braun, the marketing executive for Usher. Justin then signed a contract with Raymond Braun Media Group (RBMG) and ended up becoming a huge success. He was in a traditional school as a child, but as his fame grew, he needed to be schooled at home. In his high school years, Justin had tutors to help him through the studying and recently took a test that proved he graduated.
Demi Lovato
A singer-songwriter and actress, Demi Lovato first rose to prominence on the Disney Channel. But life as a child actress wasn’t always easy in 7th grade, she was bullied so much that she eventually opted to be homeschooled. She told Ellen DeGeneres in 2008: “I never really understood why [I was being bullied] until looking back… I had a different lifestyle then everyone else.”
Chloe Grace Moretz
She is a rising star with a very busy shooting schedule, so Chloe is taught at home by her mom. The flexibility works for her she says, telling E!: “She understands that I like to sleep in because I get all these hours when I’m working… I get like 6 a.m. starts, so we start school around 9:30. We work till 6 p.m. but it’s worth it.”
Miley Cyrus
Another child star, Miley Cyrus, needed to be homeschooled. Back when she was still Hannah Montana, she spoke to Seventeen about her homeschooling, saying: “I’m actually graduating early. I got a lot of work done already. Being home schooled, I have had a lot of tutors help me. I will be done next year with high school and I’m really excited about that. Also, what is really cool about the school that I go to is that it has prep classes for college. So, when I get a chance I will have that availability because I have studied for it.”
