In today’s world leading a stress-free life is almost an impossible thing. And while you can’t just eliminate stress from your life completely, there is something you can do to regain calmness and help your body and mind relax – you can meditate. Studies show that meditation is associated with improvement in a variety of psychological and physical areas so it’s no wonder it has become so popular among celebrities. Here are the stars who practice some form of meditation.
Russell Brand
Achieving fame and fortune wasn’t satisfying, says Brand. Instead, he sought something more substantial than social values like commercialism and celebrity. Transcendental Meditation helped him feel a part of something greater, he reported at a recent press conference for the David Lynch foundation, adding that the practice helps him remain sober. “Transcendental Meditation has been incredibly valuable to me both in my recovery as a drug addict and in my personal life, my marriage, my professional life,” Brand said.
Tina Turner
Tina Turner is one of the many celebs who have used meditation in order to overcome a tough obstacle in life. For more than 30 years, she has been an avid follower and supporter of meditation, especially due to her strong support of Buddhist beliefs. Tina Turner even credits meditation for allowing her to gain the inner confidence and courage that she needed in order to leave her abusive ex-husband, Ike Turner.
Orlando Bloom
The star of films like Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean credits meditation and the philosophies behind it for helping him to keep away from the self-destructive path so common in Hollywood. He follows a practical approach to meditation and incorporating meditation into his daily life so that it strengthens him, as well as helping him find peace.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah has been practicing meditation every day since she invited meditation teachers to Harpo Studios in 2011 to lead the entire company together in meditation at the beginning and end of the work day. She revealed the profound effect meditation (specifically Transcendental Meditation or ‘TM’) has had on her life when she appeared on The Dr. Oz Show. “The one thing I want to continue to do is to center myself every day and make that a practice for myself, because I am one thousand percent better when I do.”
Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes practices transcendental meditation (TM), after learning about it from David Lynch, which she says is able to keep her calm and relaxed. She also says that TM allows her to tap into her creative side when she needs to. She also says that meditation allows her to create a sense of balance and find that centered place in her life, which can be hard to do as a celebrity. “I’m actually huge into meditation, transcendental meditation, and that really helps create not only a sense of balance, but all the other stuff—this is going to sound cliché—but, serenity and kind of a calm state of mind.”
Richard Gere
Gere is a committed student of Zen Buddhism and close friend of the Dalai Lama. He is also one of meditation’s most ardent supporters, who practices meditation on a daily basis to jumpstart the flow of positive energy. “It helps me set my motivation for the day,” the actor said.
Kristen Bell
Actress Kristen told US Shape magazine that meditation is her number one piece of health and wellbeing advice. “Do meditative yoga for 10 minutes every morning. When you have a problem whether it’s road rage, your guy, or work meditation allows everything to unfold the way it’s supposed to,” she said.
Hugh Jackman
The Wolverine star commits himself to hardcore training and dieting in preparation for filming the action-packed X Men movies. His secret to enduring the intense fitness regime: meditation. In an interview with Oprah, Jackman has said, “In meditation, I can let go of everything. I’m not Hugh Jackman. I’m not dad. I’m not a husband. I’m just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything. I take a little bath in it.” The actor also attributes meditation to help him calm his obsessive compulsive behavior.
Ellen DeGeneres
The talk show host explained why she meditates in an interview on the Today show in the US. “Because it feels good. Kinda like when you have to shut your computer down, just sometimes when it goes crazy, you just shut it down and when you turn it on, it’s OK again. That’s what meditation is for me.”
Halle Berry
Halle Berry used meditation to make peace with her abusive father after he passed away, since she wasn’t able to forgive him for all the heartache he caused her sister and mother. “I realize you can have relationships with people even when they’re gone and my relationship with my father has gotten much better now that he’s not here,” Berry has said. “I’ve been doing a series of meditations since the day he died, when I go to this gazebo—I imagine it in my mind—and there he is sitting there, and he says to me all the things that he should have said to me in his life.”
