Amanda Bynes’ case is a typical example of a child star who found fame at an early age and then hit rock bottom. Despite seeming like they have it all, child stars grow up in the spotlight and that sometimes puts too much pressure on them and there are many well-documented downfalls. Some of them manage to clean up their act, while others aren’t that lucky. Keep on reading to see which child stars became troubled adults.
Amanda Bynes began her professional acting at the age of 7, and hit it big first as a regular cast member of Nickelodeon’s Figure It Out and All That, and in 1999 she landed her own sketch show, called The Amanda Show. Today she is best known for her nutty behavior. It all began in April 2012, when she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence. On May 23, 2013, Bynes was arrested at her home in Manhattan for criminal possession of marijuana, attempted tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment. On July 22, 2013, she got arrested in front of a stranger’s house in Thousand Oaks, California, where she had allegedly started a small fire. She was hospitalized and treated for various mental disorders. In September she was transferred from UCLA Medical Center to receive specialized treatment in a private facility outside of Los Angeles. In December 2013, Amanda was released from treatment to her parents.
After appearing in her first advertisement when she was just 11 months old, she went on to star in E.T. A turbulent childhood led to two stints in rehab by the age of 14. The following year she emancipated herself from her family and moved into her own apartment. Now Drew is a wildly successful actress, director, and producer, wife and a mother.
Edward won an MTV Award for Best Breakthrough Performance in 1992 for his role as John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. But these days things are different. Furlong entered rehab in 2000, but a year later was hospitalized for a suspected drug overdose. What followed were multiple arrests for driving without a license, driving under the influence, and public intoxication. Since 2009, he’s been arrested for domestic violence three times, gotten divorced, been dropped from several film projects, and is currently subject to supervised visits with his son following an incident where the child tested positive for cocaine while in his father’s care.
Britney Spears started singing in church as a young child, and had her first break when she was cast in a re-boot of Disney’s “Mickey Mouse Club,” in 1992. She was arrested and hospitalized in January 2008 after she barricaded herself in a bathroom with her son Jayden and refused to come out. The singer had refused to return her two sons to their father, Kevin Federline, after a court-monitored visit. After a three-hour standoff Britney was arrested, strapped to a gurney and taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was held for 72-hours for psychiatric treatment and evaluation. No criminal charges were filed, but the singer lost custody of her sons, Jayden and Sean Preston, following the incident.
Shia LaBeouf began performing stand-up at comedy clubs at age 10, and got his big break as Louis Stevens on Disney’s Even Stevens, in 2000. In 2007 Shia LaBeouf was arrested at a Chicago Walgreens after he appeared drunk and refused to leave the store. In March 2008, a warrant was issued for the actor’s arrest after he didn’t show up to a hearing in relation to a ticket he received for unlawful smoking in Burbank, California. In July 2008, Shia ended up in the hospital after he crashed his car and injured his hand. Although police determined LaBeouf was not at fault for the accident, he was still charged with a DUI and his license suspended for a year. In February 2011, the actor found himself in handcuffs after he got in an altercation with another bar patron and got punched in the face. In October 2011, the actor was involved in another bar fight in Vancouver, Canada.
Lindsay Lohan has been working since the age of 3, when she signed with Ford Models. Star of The Parent Trap, Lohan unfortunately has become known more for her personal life and rehab stints than her acting career. She was first arrested May 26, 2007 on suspicion of driving under the influence after her car struck a curb in Los Angeles. Two days later Lohan checked herself into rehab. On July 24, 2007, she was pulled over by police and arrested on five counts, including driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license and possession of narcotics. She heads back to rehab hours after the arrest. On August 23, the actress was charged with seven misdemeanor counts for her two DUI arrests. After showing up late to a probationary hearing to review her cases on October 16, 2009, Lohan lands herself another year of probation tacked on to the initial 36 months. The next month she was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating her probation. Lohan serves only 14 days in jail and begins her court-ordered 90 day rehab program. And this is how she has spent the last several years – rehabs, arrests, jail, rehabs again and so on.
When we get fame and power and money only strong ones can cope with it. Too many of us, especially at teens and very young age get into all kinds of addiction including illegal substances. This is, unfortunately, a very spread scenario in the states. People seem not to be interested in anything else, but fun. They just do not know other ways to be happy and look for the new experiences, emotions and sensation in narcotics and alcohol. This is a decay of nation, unfortunately.
Probably it is sad when kids are getting too much attention in a young age, too much attention, too much money, and too much pampering. In my opinion it ruins the character and make them growing up with the “star” disease and being very spoilt. One of the greatest examples is Lindsay Lohan, who was one of the America’s sweethearts, and who finished being a drug addicted person. Or Macaulay Culkin who started such a wonderful carrier in the movie “Home Alone”, no one knows where he is now, and it is all due to the fact that he did not know the word no in his childhood.
I am looking at those smiling pictures of Britney Spears and remember the way she looked when she cut all of her hair off, and looked not really fit in her music videos (especially considering the significant lack of clothes). I feel sorry for her; she got in love with the wrong person and in the wrong time. But that is something that she really deserved after she cheated on Justin Timberlake who loved her so much. Now he has a great family, while her life is a total disaster with which she seems to not be able to keep up with.
