They might look perfect on screen, but the truth is some TV and movie couples can’t stand each other off the camera. They made us believe there was great chemistry between them, but these onscreen pairs didn’t actually get along that well in real life. Check them out.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes
Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio did not get along while filming Romeo + Juliet even though no one knows why. Danes thought the prank-loving DiCaprio was immature, while he thought she was way too uptight. The fact that she was only 17 and he just few years older at the time might explain the problems between them. Claire has never worked with Leonardo ever again and apparently refuses to do so.
Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn
While filming Four Christmases Witherspoon reportedly took issue with Vaughn’s relaxed filming attitude, as she preferred rehearsing for scenes while he liked spontaneity. They clashed several times on set, and during promotion for the film the actors walked red carpets separately. However, they have managed to make up eventually. Reese said she and Vince were “very good friends” and any rumors otherwise were ridiculous.
Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze
Tensions between these two were already after clashing on the set of Red Dawn, but Dirty Dancing made things much worse. Grey nearly pulled out of the movie after learning Swayze would play her love interest, they fought constantly on set. But, they talked their issues through and became friends, talking often about their fondness for each other. In 2010, after Swayze’s death, Grey even paid tribute to her late co-star by emotionally performing a song from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack while on Dancing With the Stars.
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep
Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep absolutely hated each other while filming Kramer vs. Kramer. Meryl had a bunch of rewrites for the script, which the director totally approved of, but Dustin was not happy about it and tried to veto each one. Hoffman probably wasn’t very happy when Meryl won an Oscar for her role in this movie.
Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd
On-screen these private eyes flirted for two seasons and then sizzled by season three. But off screen, Willis and Shepherd couldn’t stand each other.
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu
Bill Murray and Lucy Liu didn’t get along on the set of the first Charlie’s Angels. Bill was always uncomfortable around her and nobody knew why until one day a huge fight erupted between the two while they were filming a scene. Murray stopped a scene in progress and pointed to Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu saying in order, “I get why you’re here, and you’ve got talent….but what in the hell are you doing here. You can’t act!” Liu responded by hitting Bill and they had to be separated to opposite corners of the room.
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling
These two absolutely hated each other while filming The Notebook. The movie’s director Nick Cassavetes revealed a particularly interesting story about what was going on on set. He said: “Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this. We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other. I walked out. I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, ‘All right let’s do this.’ And it got better after that, you know? They had it out.”
Richard Gere and Debra Winger
Winger has long been known as difficult to work with, so it’s no surprise that it wasn’t all roses when she filmed An Officer and a Gentleman with Gere in 1982. There were reports of endless on-set arguing between the co-stars, and Winger has even reportedly said that filming the movie was one of the worst experiences of her life.
Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp
According to In Touch magazine, Jolie was bothered by Depp’s partying, lateness, and general bad attitude while filming The Tourist, while Depp felt that his-costar was uptight and self-centered.
