Orlando Bloom will star in a Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet. It will be his debut on this stage. He will play the role of Shakespeare’s tragic hero Romeo and Condola Rashad will be his Juliet. The role will definitely help Bloom return to the spotlight since we last saw him in The Three Musketeers in 2011.
The director is David Leveaux, who said: “Shakespeare did not only write of his world – he imagined ours.”He explains choosing a black actress for the lead female role: “There was nothing simple about that choice but I’m not about to turn a contemporary version of Shakespeare into a sociological or political point. We know there are families from one background or another who would reject their children getting together with someone from another group. Romeo and Juliet reject that notion.” The official opening date is September 19.
