Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman checked himself into rehab for ten days earlier this month because of heroin abuse. Philip was a heroin addict in the past but he managed to overcome his addiction. He stayed clean for 23 years but recently the problems started again.

As the actor himself told TMZ, it all began when a year ago he started abusing prescription pills and that lead to heroin. Philip said that he had been using the illegal substance for one week before he decided to check into a 10-day detox treatment program, which he completed last Friday (May 24). The 45-year-old star said that he had great support from his family and friends who helped him clean up his act.

Philip has always been open about his drug and alcohol problems. He previously said: ”It was pretty bad, you know what I mean. And I know, deep down, I still look at the idea of drinking with the same ferocity that I did back then. It’s still pretty tangible. I drank too much, you know, so I stopped. You know what I mean, it’s not really complicated. I had no interest in drinking in moderation. And I still don’t. Just because all that time’s passed doesn’t mean maybe it was just a phase. That’s who I am.”
