At the beginning of your career it’s good to have some more experienced colleague to give you guidelines, useful tips and support. Same goes for actors and singers and many of them are thankful to other stars who gave them career advice. Here they are.
Johnny Depp
Late Marlon Brando had some words of wisdom for then young Johnny Depp. Johnny reports, “Many years ago Marlon Brando asked me, ‘How many films do you do per year, kid?’ I said, ‘I don’t know, maybe three or something.’ He said, ‘That’s too much. We only have so many faces in our pockets.’”
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer asked Barbra Streisand for career help: “A few years ago I sent her two scripts because I wanted to work with her. When she called back, I was too starstruck to talk to her, so my manager took the call. And you know what she told him? ‘Jennifer’s too good for these.’ It helped me rethink my whole career. Since then, I’ve only done projects I’ve loved doing.” But that’s not all. J.Lo also turned to Penelope Cruz for advice. She said, “It’s funny, I spoke to Penelope Cruz about whether I should choose movies or music. She said, ‘No! You do the movies, you do the music — everybody loves that about you.’ I thought, you’re right, what am I thinking? It’s a lot to do both, it’s never been an easy road, but the truth is I never entertain that thought for more than two minutes.”
Miley Cyrus
Miley was told by Cyndi Lauper to be fearless: ”The best advice I’ve been given was from Cyndi Lauper – she told me to go lasso the moon, meaning don’t be afraid of anything. Just go and do anything you want to. I thought that was pretty cool and poetic.”
Zac Efron
Leonardo DiCaprio once advised Zac not to ruin his life and career by doing drugs. Zac remembers, “It was kind of his way-out-the-door, last-minute advice. He said, ‘Oh, by the way, if you really want to mess this all up, try heroin.’ I said, ‘Thanks’, and he said, ‘No, seriously, that’s pretty much the only way you’re going to screw this up, and you shouldn’t go down that road – it will mess you up without fail. Do not do drugs.’”Efron also asked Dennis Quaid for some career tips: ”I’ve always wanted to do as many different things as possible. I once did a movie with Dennis Quaid and I asked him, ‘If you could go back to your younger self, what would you say?’ He said, ‘Just keep doing different kinds of movies and always change it up’, so that’s what I try and do.”
Britney Spears
This may sound ridiculous, but during her dark times Britney Spears actually got advice from Paris Hilton. And what’s even weirder, it wasn’t bad at all. “Only hire the very top agents, publicists, managers and assistants money can buy,” Paris supposedly said. ”Britney, you have to listen to people who truly are experts in entertainment. You can’t be listening to friends, no matter how good or loyal they are, to tell you how to run your career.”
Emma Stone
Emma often turns to Ryan Gosling for advice: “I’ve asked him to read a couple of scripts. I just really like hearing his viewpoint because I know that it’s never going to be tainted. He’s very much his own person. It has really just been scripts so far, because I only met him two years ago when we did Crazy, Stupid, Love, but it was like meeting a member of your team or something… I immediately felt a kinship with him… I really like his brain.”
Jeremy Renner
Jeremy was worried about awards season but got some great advice from Charlize Theron: “I had to ask Charlize Theron, a very good friend, about going through an Academy Award campaign for The Hurt Locker. She told me to take it moment by moment. Don’t f**king freak out, just have fun.”
