Steve Coogan on ‘Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa’

b00n4754_640_360 Steve Coogan talks about the latest Alan Partridge’s movie, Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa for the new issue of Empire that is out March 28. It is a hostage thriller that’s been long time coming but the film is finally on its way. The movie portrays the events in his life to date – specifically how he tries to salvage his public career while negotiating a potentially violent turn of events at North Norfolk Digital Radio. “We’re putting him into a situation,” says Coogan. “We had to make it filmic without throwing away the DNA that makes him Alan-like. So we kicked around a lot of ideas and ended up with something that’s a bit Dog Day Afternoon and a bit Network. There is a threat level.” Coogan is also one of the writers, along with Peter Baynham, Armando Iannucci, Neil and Rob Gibbons.

The director of the film is Declan Lowney, who says: “The notion of Alan being caught up in a hostage situation is outlandish, but how it happens is perfectly believable. Steve strives for stuff to be real, even with all the gags. That said, there’s quite a bit of action. We’ve got violence, guns and heavy kissing.” Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa is set for an August 7 release date.alan-main
