Every once in a while we can read interviews with celebs whining about all the pressure that comes with fame. Sure, we understand it’s not the most pleasant thing to have paparazzi following you around and it’s not always easy to cope with constant media attention. Whether it is due to pressure or heavy substance abuse, some people just can’t control themselves. Here are some of the worst celebrity outbursts.

In June 2005, Russell Crowe was arrested for throwing a telephone at a hotel employee. Crowe became enraged after being unable to call his wife in Australia. He stormed down to the lobby of the Mercer Hotel in New York City and launched the phone. The phone hit the concierge in the face, causing lacerations. Crowe was charged with second-degree assault. He later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was ordered to pay a $160 fine.

In 2001, Mariah Carey made a bizarre appearance on “TRL” where she showed up wearing nothing but a T-shirt, and later stripped down to her shorts and a tank top, handed out popsicles to the audience and said: “All I know is I just want one day off when I can go swimming and look at rainbows and eat ice cream. And maybe like learn how to ride a bicycle.” The singer was hospitalized days later for “extreme exhaustion” and a “physical and emotional breakdown,” and she stayed under medical supervision for two weeks.

In 2009, Christian Bale went nuts on the set of Terminator Salvation and verbally assaulted a member of the film crew. The Batman star was caught on audio going ballistic at the film’s director of photography. Bale was mad that the DP walked on set and ruined a scene. At one point Bale screams “Do you want me to go and trash your lights? Do you want me to go and trash them? … Then why are you trashing my scene?” He later issued a public apology, stating he “acted like a punk” and that the outburst was “inexcusable.”

This one has had a number of meltdowns over the years, but the horrible phone call with Oksana Grigorieva is definitely one of the worst. The actor reportedly left a seriously intense, profanity-laden voicemail message that shocked the world when he even threatened to kill the mother of his child and use her remains as manure. Another incident that shocked the world happened when Gibson was arrested for DUI. “F**king Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” the actor told a Jewish officer.

In 2011, shortly after her split with Marc Anthony, J.Lo put on a show of exes during a concert at the Mohegan Sun casino. The performance included actors who resembled all of her past loves: Cris Judd, Ben Affleck, Diddy, and of course, Anthony. After the show, J.Lo said: “I took a trip down memory lane.” She then broke down in tears on stage.

Tom Cruise’s 2005 breakdown began with the actor’s appearance on Oprah, where he jumped up and down on couches and declared his love for Katie Holmes. Cruise later shocked the world in an interview with Matt Lauer, in which he chastised Brooke Shields for using antidepressants to cope with her postpartum depression. Cruise labeled psychiatry a “pseudoscience” and he repeatedly told Lauer he was “glib” and didn’t know the extensive history of psychiatry.

Anne was hospitalized on August 19, 2000, shortly after her very public breakup with Ellen DeGeneres. The actress knocked on the front door of a rural California home where she made nonsensical statements to its residents, claiming that she was God and would take everyone back to heaven in her spaceship.

In April 1996, a naked Robert Downey Jr. was caught speeding down Sunset Boulevard, throwing “imaginary rats” out the car window. Having battled alcohol and drug addiction for years, the Iron Man star was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded .357-caliber Magnum handgun.
