Magazines In Alphabetical Order

Abanderado: From vol. 2 number 1 of a magazine devoted to researching the Spanish Civil War comes AFVs in the Spanish Civil War. This is part two in a series, and profiles the Bilbao armoured car.

After Action Review: The subtitle says it all: Military History and Battle Simulation Analysis. From number 2 of a magazine covering all eras of history, comes Sioux Wars. This introduction "Warfare on the Great Plains" is part one in a series. Also, as a bonus, comes Santa Anna Skirmish Rules (Warfare in Mexico 1820 - 1870).

Age of Napoleon: From issue #20 of a magazine devoted to military history of the Napoleonic era, comes The Battle of Wurzburg. This September 3rd, 1796 battle may have been overshadowed by Napoleon in Italy, but it showed Archduke Charles in fine form.

American Revolution Journal: From Vol. I No. 1 of a magazine devoted to the military history of the War of Independence era, comes All-Black Battalion, information regarding the recruitment of slaves into a Rhode Island unit.

The Armchair General: Going back to the late 1960's, Pat Condray's TAG covered all periods of history for the toy soldier collector, history buff, and the wargamer. Although no longer being published, its articles still thrill for their range and creativity. Here's one on Artillery 1850s-1900.

The Art of War: From issue #23/24 of a magazine that supports the historical boardgames games of Clash of Arms comes Early WWII Aircraft with historical briefings of some early war British and Italian biplanes (and one Italian monoplane), six historically based scenarios, and four data/spec cards for the aircraft.

Battlefields: From Volume 1 issue 4 of a magazine specializing in offering historically based scenarios for miniatures enthusiasts comes The Battle of Trebbia. Hannibal and the Carthaginian army suffered a winter crossing of the Alps to invade Italy...and ran into the Roman Legions in this Decemeber 218BC battle.

Battle-Wire: Maschinegerwehr 42 Machine Gun and Fallshirmjagergewehr (Paratroop Rifle) 42 are examples of some of the articles you'll find in Battle-Wire, a newsletter that supports the company's Battleground WWII tabletop miniature rules. These profiles of weaponry used by German infantry in WWII contain illustrations and specifications, some background history, and rules adaptations for Battleground WWII rules.

Berg's Review of Games (BROG): From Volume 2 No. 28 of a newsletter specializing in reviews of simulations, board wargames and computer wargames comes Review: Iron Bottom Sound II. This Moments In History game from designer Jack Greene tackles WWII naval combat in the Pacific theatre.

Campaign: Formerly known as Panzerfaust, this 1970s-era magazine is no longer being published, but for those that missed it the first time, you can read it now in MagWeb. Campaign provides reviews of a variety of games, historical articles, and board wargame hints and strategies. Confederate Navy 1861-1865 provides an overview to the strategy and tactics, as well as the successes and failures, of the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. Includes a specifications chart of Confederate ironclads.

Chainmail: From issue #38 of a sci-fi/fantasy gaming magazine comes pair of articles: how-to advice on Fairness as a Dungeon Master and a nifty piece fiction piece called TimeSpin, based on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Citadel: The Citadel is published by the Northwest Historical Miniature Gaming Society four times per year and covers all periods of military history and historical miniature gaming. Combined Arms Theory and Practice in the 20th Century offers some excellent philosophical critque on England.

Clash of Empires: From the premier issue of a magazine covering 19th Century European Wars comes the 1849 Siege of Rome, where the French answered the call to wrest the city from Guiseppi Garibaldi and Italian revolutionaries and return control to Pope Pius IX.

Colonial Conquest: From issue 11 of a publication specializing in Victorian-era colonial history, product reviews, and gaming comes: Blockhouses of the Boer War, an examination of a new British weapon against the Boer guerillas: a blockhouse.

Competitive Edge (formerly GameFix): From issue No. 5 of a magazine devoted to all eras a history -- and one that includes a game in every issue -- comes The Battle of Winceby during the English Civil War.

Conflict: Back in the 1970s, a new magazine was created to combine military history and cutting-edge simulation design. Conflict magazine lasted only seven issues, but made an impressive impact that spun off several companies and projects. We tracked down the publisher, licensed the rights, and now present an article from #3: Weserubung: The German Invasion of Norway covers the World War II action from April to June 1940.

The Courier: From issue #71 of a magazine devoted to all eras of history and gaming comes Assault on Korpetsch, a WWII battle in early 1942 between the 22nd Panzer and elements of the Soviet 15th Tank Regiment and the 263rd Rifle Regiment.

Cry Havoc: From issue #23 of a publication devoted to all aspects of history comes the article, Benedict Arnold: The Traitor that Saved America, which profiles the commander in the beginning of the American Revolution.

HMGS Mid-South Dispatch: From the October 1998 issue comes Museums and Places of Interest in the Mediterranean, which tells about places you don't want to miss. This is the official journal of HMGS Mid-South.

Dragoman: From issue Vol. 1 No. 2 of a magazine devoted to the military history of the Ottoman Empire, and miniature warfare to simulate that era, comes The Sultan's Big Guns, a look at Ottoman artillery.

Experimental Games Group From issue #1 of a newsletter devoted to the "Matrix" style of military gaming comes Introduction to Matrix Gaming, which will answer all your questions about Chris Engle's creation.

18th Century Military Notes & Queries: From issue #12 of a magazine devoted to "Warfare in the Age of Reason, 1660-1780" comes a profile of the army of The Most Serene Republic of Genoa in the Austrian Succession War. Illustrations and extensive uniform and flag notes are included.

English Civil War Times: From a magazine devoted to the military history of the ECW comes Essex Men and the Battle of Worcester (1651), a unit profile and battle description.

El Dorado: From Vol. VII No. 2 of a magazine devoted to Central and South America military history comes The Quito Campaign and the 1822 Battle of Pichincha.

Empire Eagles and Lions: From issue #11 (second volume) of a magazine devoted to Napoleonic era history and gaming comes The Irish Legion, an unit of Irishmen in the service of the French.

Europa: From issue #55 of a magazine devoted to WWII history and supporting the Europa game system comes Desert Dawn, an analysis of the North African Italian and British offensives during 1940-1941. First Empire: From issue No. 31 of a magazine devoted to the Napoleonic era comes a profile of Prince Eugene de Beauharnais Viceroy of Italy, and commander in chief of French forces in the Italian theater, 1809.

The Frontline: From volume 1 issue 1 of a magazine devoted to all eras of military history and wargaming comes a profile of The Chindits, the Allied guerrilla force in WWII Burma. Includes January 1944 TO&E.

Game News This out-of-print publication from the mid 1980s covered the gaming world with news, reviews, features, and scenarios. Game Review: Shiloh, provides an example of one of the many wargame reviews available--especially if you are a collector.

The Gauntlet This publication covers military history and military history products, including computer games, books, boardgames, miniatures, and more. The Battle of Le Hamel, 4 July 1918, gives you an idea of the mix between history and simulation. The article examines the Australian attack, backed by tanks, to recapture the area around Le Hamel from the Germans.

Greenhill Military Book News This publication is primarily designed to support the line of books published and distributed by Greenhill Books. Within are excerpts from the books, such as this one from No. 80, about WWII Soviet Casualties and Combat Losses , which includes a sample table from the book by Colonel-General Krivosheev.

The Heliograph: From the magazine for Vistorian Era Colonial Warfare and Wargaming comes Roll to Your Rifle 1:1 Skirmish Rules for Victorian Era .

Imperial Herald: From Volume 1 Issue 3 comes a Q&A look at Legend of the 5 Rings collectible card game.: Oracle of the Void. Imperial Herald is AEG's publication that supports the L5R CCG.

King or Parliament: From Mark Turnbull comes an article on Battle of Cropedy Bridge 1644 and the win by King Charles I during the English Civil War. King or Parliament is exclusively available on MagWeb.com.

The Knights Round Table: From the premier issue of a newsletter supporting the medieval miniatures rules, Day of Battle, comes an article about modifications to and ideas about the rule governing Harassing Morale.

KTB From the premier U-Boat research organization in the world, Sharkhunters International Inc., KTB Magazine is dedicated to submarine history -- its collection, preservation, and dissemination without politics, prejudice, or propoaganda. Founded 1983. U-boats a specialty, but this valuable resource for submarines covers all navies. Take a look at these sample articles from back issue #104: German U-Boat U-505 and Imperial Japanese Navy Submarine History.

Lone Warrior: All historical periods, with a gaming interest for solitaire study. From issue #114 of a magazine devoted to all eras of history and solitaire gaming comes Western Gunfight rules and scenario.

Masters of Role Playing: is a 96-page magazine covering RPGs, and includes book and game reviews, adventures, fiction, cartoons, and other RPG sci-fi and fantasy advice. From issue #6 of a magazine comes a pair of reviews Star Trek Novels: USS Excaliber and Forge: Out of Chaos RPG.

MicroMark: offers over 850 "Army Lists" covering the 19th and 20th centuries, including Napoleonic, WWI, WWII, Cold War, Persian Gulf War, Arab-Israeli Wars, Spanish Civil War, Gran Chaco War, and Interwar periods. Here's one for a WWII American Armoured Division (1944-1945).

MWAN: Issue #81 of the Midwest Wargamers Association Newsletter offers 192 pages of history and historical gaming (with an emphasis on historical miniatures and a lot of product reviews and news) covering all periods. If you thought the Soviets had problems in Afghanistan back in the 1980s, take a look at Afghanistan 1919, which covers a little-known British post-WWI campaign.

Napoleon: From issue No. 1 of a magazine devoted to the Napoleonic era comes the history of The Vistula Legion, a Polish unit in the service of the French.

The Naval SITREP: Larry Bond edits this magazine focusing on 20th century naval and air information and supporting the Harpoon and Command at Sea rules. From issue #10 comes Airships, a look at the history and WWI and WWII anti-submarine tactics of blimps and dirgibles.

Operations: The Wargaming Journal From issue No. 7 of a magazine supporting The Gamers' series of American Civil War and WWII hex-based board wargames comes Assaulting With Success, historical analysis of coordinated divisional and corp level attacks that succeeded in the American Civil War.

Paradies Lost. No, that's not a typo, but the brainchild of Abram Paradies, who, like Milton, delves into imagination via his imaginary world of Arveta. From issue #1, the introduction: A place of mystery and adventure....

Perfidious Albion: From the UK-based magazine that reviews board wargames, computer games, books, miniatures, cards, and other products historical comes a review of the computer wargame Age of Rifles, offering a look at battles from the Mexican-American War to the Franco-Prussian War.

The Rebel Yell From issue No. 3 (Spring 1997) of a magazine supporting HMGS South (Historical Miniatures--although they cover non-historical topics too) comes A Review of MagWeb. This is the first comprehensive review of our service and well worth reading. Note that we have added quite a few more magazines since the review came out...

Renaissance Ink: From issue #7 of a magazine devoted to gaming of all kinds, with an emphasis on painting tips and techniques comes a Painting Tips with Inks article.

Renaissance Notes & Queries: Spanish Raid on Mount's Bay offers a description of a Spanish incursion into England during the summer of 1595. From issue #1 of a magazine devoted to Renaissance era military history.

Saga: From issue #56 of a magazine devoted to Ancients, Dark Ages, and Medieval military history and gaming comes Tmima Straiotikon Plirophorion, a "military intelligence" column that now goes to Cyprus to highlight sites which would be of interest to visitors and historians.

Seven Years War Association Journal: From Vol. IX No. 1 of a magazine devoted to the history of the middle third of the 18th century (1733-1766), with an emphasis on the Seven Years War and the French and Indian War, comes a In Search of French Grenadiers article.

Shadis: From issue #24 of a magazine devoted to fantasy and sci-fi role-playing games (and a little extra to spice things up) comes a City of Causoban adventure and a Lego Pirates miniatures optional rules.

Shadis Presents: This magazine is now consolidated into Shadis, but the back issues hold considerable sci-fi and fantasy RPG information. From issue #18.5 is a "faq" filled article about Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Simulacrum: From No. 1 of a magazine devoted to military history collectible information about wargames, as well as some book and other militaria info, comes a look at the wargame, Rommel in the Desert, from Columbia Games.

Skirmish Magazine: From No. 1 of a magazine devoted to military re-enactment societies and organizations comes an article from one of the most popular sections of the magazine: On Parade: Military Vehicle Trust.

Strut and Conquer From Vol. 1 Issue 3 of a newsletter supporting Markham Design board wargames comes an article War of Roses covering new designs to be released by Rob Markham.

Taisho: From the newsletter covering Samurai, Japanese Warfare, and the Killer Katanas ruleset comes the article, Date Masamune's Retainers on the loyal retainers that made Date Masamune one of the most powerful Daimyos in Japan.

Tales of Cross Haven: From No. 18 of a newsletter that supports the online fantasy world of Juravia, although applicable to any RPG, comes the rumor pages of the world. Padway Quickprofit is an example of one of the rumors swirling around the world.

Time Portal Passages From the January 1999 issue of a magazine examining all periods of military history, Loyalist Uniform Guide to American Revolution covering most of the units during the war.

The Tombstone Epitath: From issue #1 of a newsletter supporting the collectible card game DoomTown comes Deaditorial. This introduces the sci-fi/Western setting of the game.

Tornado Alert: From issue #23 of the Journal of the Tornado Alley Historical Miniature Gaming Society (HMGS) comes Art of the Siege, a rules set for simulating tabletop sieges of castles and cities during the medieval and renaissance periods.

Valkyrie: From issue No. 14 of a British magazine covering all sci-fi and fantasy role-playing systems comes a Star Wars Scenario: Scorched Earth, where a rogue droid rules a dump.

Veteran Campaigner From issue #3 of an electronic magazine devoted to history buffs and miniatures gaming for military personnel comes the Scenario: Surrounded Spetznatz in Grozny, a list of sources for this modern conflict.

The Volunteer The South Jersey Confederation of Wargamers publishes a newsletter called The Volunteer with articles about club news, game and book reviews, history, and more. From the Jul/Aug 1999 issue is an article about a tabletop battle simulation in the WWII Desert called Gimme Shelter!.

Wargame Design From Vol. II nr. 1 of a magazine (from OSG's Kevin Zucker) devoted to the design topics and philosophies comes Stages in Design, an examination of the process behind creating a board wargame.

White Knight From Issue #3 of a publication devoted to science fiction and fantasy gaming comes Random Thoughts on the Wizards Acquisition of TSR , a look from WoTC's CEO about what will happen to TSR. Includes the 1997 release schedule of TSR products, including Dungeons and Dragons ®, Dragon Dice ®, Spellfire ®, novels, magazines, and more.

The Zouave: From the Winter 1995 issue of a magazine devoted to the American Civil War era comes the Battle of Sabine Crossroads during the Red River campaign, 1864.
