A British biographical drama directed by American director Fred Zinneman (“High Noon”, “From Here to Eternity”), “A Man for All Seasons” is often considered to be on eof the greatest British films ever made. It was adapted from Robert Bolt's play of the same name, and it tells the story of Sir Thomas More, and particularly his power struggle with King Henry VIII over the annulment of his marriage with Catherine of Aragon. The plot takes place in the time span between 1529 and 1535. King Henry VII wishes to divorce his current wife Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn. The Roman Catholic church disapproves, and King Henry is eager to find an alternative solution. Sir Thomas More, a respected scholar and a member of the Privy Council. A devout Christian, More is the only Privy Council member openly opposing King Henry's divorce. He is visited by the Lord Chancellor of England, who hopes to make More change his stance. When the Lord Chancellor is banished from the court for failing to make the divorce happen, More gets appointed in his place. King Henry, now in an open feud with the Vatican, threatens to denounce the authority of the Pope in England and proclaim himself the “Supreme Head of the Church of England”. Scandalized More resigns his post, which ultimately leads to his trial on the charges of high treason. “A Man for All Seasons” has won six Academy Awards, including best picture, best director, and the best director. Even the Vatican listed it as one of the greatest movies of all times.
