Every time someone gets operated, they make sure to give him anaesthesia. This is the substance that makes the body numb for as long as the doctors need it to be, in order to get the operation done. The patient gets put to sleep and remembers nothing. After that, the effects wear off and there is nothing special about it. It is used to reduce the pain. But, there is a small percentage of people that don't experience the whole effect of it. It happens, with one out of 300 people, that the patient can still hear everything, is aware of everything and feels everything. That is the case with Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen). He is a very rich and philanthropic man, who lives in New York. After finding out that his heart is failing, he decides to go under knife and get that done as soon as possible. After all, he is to be married to gorgeous Sam Lockwood (Jessica Alba). But, his mother Lilith Beresford (Lena Olin) doesn't approve of this marriage and wants him to be even greater. But, as Clay remains totally awake during the procedure, he hears more than one thing that he should be worried about. Who is a friend and who is a foe, that is the question that Clay is having after he is brought back into the recovery room.
