In this science fiction comedy released in 1985 and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, typical teenager from a lover middle class family with an office working dad, an alcoholic mom and aimless siblings. His best friend is a 30 years older mad scientist Doc Brown who one day informs him that he has turned his DeLorean into a plutonium powered time machine. Unfortunately for them, the plutonium was stolen from Libyan terrorists who manage to trace Doc and shoot him on the spot. In his attempt to flee Marty incidentally activates the time machine and finds himself transported 30 years back into the past. There he crosses path with his parents, now in high school. He even becomes his own mom’s love interest (Oedipus, anyone?) which threatens to jeopardize his very existence in the future, but after a lot of shenanigans he somehow manages to unite his future parents, finds a way to get back to the future and even save his good friend Doc, who repays him by taking him on another danger infested journey, this time into the future (but you’ll have to watch the sequel to see what happens then).
Even though the script for the movie was rejected for years by Hollywood studios, “Back to the Future” was the biggest box office hit of 1985, and it became the first part of a franchise that includes two more sequels.
