What is the movie Bed of Fear about?
The third feature film directed by one Stanley Kubrick, ‘The Killing” is a picture perfect film noir crime drama. It tells the tale of Johnny clay, an aging criminal deciding to pull off one last heist before riding off into the sunset. Clay plans on stealing two million dollars from a money counting room at the horse race track, and he assembles a team featuring a sniper, a betting window teller, a racetrack barman, a crooked cop, and even a wrestler. They all have specific tasks that they must perform in order for the heist to succeed. The heist is an absolute success, aside from the sniper being gunned down by the police, but the window teller’s wife convinces her lover to steal the money from his husband’s crew. A deadly shootout ensues, living the badly wounded window teller the only survivor. With the last ounces of his strength he drags himself to his apartment where he kills his traitorous wife. Clay sees him stumbling in the streets and realizes something is wrong. He packs the heist money into the suitcase and brings his wife with him to the airport. The airport official won’t let him board the plane with such a huge suitcase for hand luggage, and he reluctantly agrees to check it into the cargo area. As he watches his suitcase fall off of a cart with money spilling out, he gives up all hope of escape and waits for the cops to come and pick him up.

The film immediately has the sort of aura that Kubrick evokes in all of his films. There's a sinister edge to everything that goes on. Each character is clearly defined by a trope and in the case of this film it is a very effective method of film making. This film could also stand the test of time and a possible remake, but I would not wish that kind of risk on a great film like this. You find yourself rooting for the characters who are the bad guys, in reality, but you don't care. You want them to be okay in the end. Kubrick refuses to give the viewer that satisfaction. It's a sort of tantalizing film that leaves you wanting more in the end.

Another cool part of the movie was the heist itself. It was very well planned and executed and obviously took time to think up. The depressing climax and ending lean a lot towards the work of Hitchcock. In fact, if this film had been in some parts been by Hitchcock, it would not have been too much of a surprise.
If you are into classic, black and white crime dramas, then this movie is for you.
