Writers and poets are most sensible people in the world. While they live, they get no compassion or understanding from the others, with whom they share their lives. They often stay misunderstood. And when they die, they are still misunderstood. But, when time passes, people begin to realize which message they wanted to share. And it is only then that they celebrate great poets. The same case is with Ingrid Jonker, whose life is portrayed in this film. Ingrid Jonker (Carice van Houten) lived in South Africa. She was the daughter of South African MP, Abraham (Rutger Hauer), and a very talented writer. Since she started showing signs of mental illness very early, she used self medication which involves sex and lots of drinking. After she realized that her fathers beliefs and hers aren't actually on the same page, two of them became more and more estranged. Without love, that she was supposed to get from her father, Ingrid married Pieter, which was her father's demand, had a young healthy baby with him, but carried on to have affairs. One day, as she nearly drowned during one of her swimming sessions, she got rescued by the writer called Jack Cope (Liam Cunningham). With a spark that was born between them at that moment, the fire becomes greater each day. Despite both of them are already married, they decide to still have a relationship and live together. Throughout the movie the audience gets to see her fighting with her inner demons, fighting against her father, who censors her every poem, because of it's contents, as well as fighting for the man she loves.
