What is the movie Bless Me, Ultima about?
Based on novel of Rudolfo Anaya which was forbidden in the past, Carl Franklin wrote screenplay and directed an outstanding movie. Story is placed in New Mexico during World War 2. Events that are described in the story are mostly driven with fear of unknown. In place where people are not well educated and they have no idea how scarce their knowledge is, words like witch, evil and curse can be heard frequently. Main character of Bless Me, Ultima are placed in such environment and they have to deal with violent and fearful mob. During the war even remote parts in New Mexico were affected. Their sons and husbands were taken and sent to fight. This created a tense atmosphere in every community. At that time, there were racial and religious issues popping up here and there. In this atmosphere, Antonio grew up under influence of older lady named Ultima. She was traditional healer who used herbs and “magic”. As a young boy Antonio wanted to know everything and Ultima explained a lot to him in an interesting way, offering different perspective that was already lost even at that time. Standing proud with dignity Ultima faces with many accusations and angry people. Production is done perfectly, costumes are accurate, sets are done correctly and story binds all that creating great movie.
