What is the movie Calvary about?
Despite the epic and religious name “Calvary” is a black comedy drama. The film is written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. Father James Lavelle is the major character of the movie. As any other priest, he intents to make the world a better place and help people figure out what they believe in and what will make them happy. However it’s not that easy at it seams: he is constantly saddened and shocked by confrontational and spiteful inhabitants of the small town he lives in. Grant absolution after a confession is one of his responsibilities as a priest. One day he as usual performs his priest’s duties and listens to somebody’s confession. Instead of repenting his sins that person threatens father’s life. That’s the unfortunate moment when Father James Lavelle realizes that dark forces begin to close in around him. But for that person in the booth it’s not a simple act of violence, it is an act of revenge. When he was a child he was molested by a priest. He tells father James that he tasted semen at the age of 7. That’s why he wants to take a life of an innocent person, as his innocence was taken from him.

So the plot is quite easy, during preaching, the priest of a catholic church located in Ireland hears some weird words, “when i was seven years old i got to know the taste of sperm when i was raped by a priest, i was feeling awful, but i survived and now i want my revenge by killing you”. This is how this movie has started.
Of course father James has recognized the voice of one of people who are regular in the church and he could have go to the police, he could have carry a gun in order to defend himself. He could and though he bought a gun, in the last moment he has thrown it into the sea. But he kept living his regular life and helping people in the church. Yes it is hard to live when you know the day when you will die, but he has decided that this is his fate, and decided to go on this track further. Honestly speaking for me it was difficult to watch this movie, as i am a very religious person, and since the beginning of the movie i felt how disgusting it is the story of the killer, and realized that sometimes awful things happen.

People who will see this movie will have the possibility to track seven days from the life of father James who knows that he will be killed soon, but still he is trying to figure out this complex world, and save the souls of those people who are near him (even in the case when they do not really deserve it), he is bringing back the faith to those people who lost it, and is recreating the relationship with his daughter. Well what can he do? No one hears him, everyone is making fun of him, and his kindness looks like a show to people around, and sometimes they even beat him. And after all those things there is a tragic end of the story. The priest has come to his calvary, he was not able to save anyone, he was not able to defend anyone, this way the world around him is grey and terrifying. Well during his life no one has appreciated him, or his words, that is why he had the hope that after his death he will be able to open people’s eyes. I cannot say that this movie has taught me anything, i felt only sadness and sorrow for the main hero.

This movie was filmed by the movie producer Michael McDonagh, i wanted to see it a long time ago, when it was released, because i liked the trailer, but found time for it only now. I do not regret the time i have spent on this movie, even though it is a bit heavier than i expected it to be. At the beginning i though there will be a bit of detective intrigue, but as a result i got a story of disappointment, pain and despair.
That was the way how the main character the good priest father James performed by Brendan Gleeson has lived the last week of his life. Once during the sunday morning when he was listening to confessions of people in his church he heard the death sentence from one of them. He was not guilty for anything, that person was simply angry with another priest, that is why he revenged on father James.
It is a wonderful movie with wonderful actors, that is why i recommend it to people who enjoy the good and qualitative modern film. I felt very sorry for him , as he really was a good person helping everyone around.

“Calvary” is a very interesting movie, but it would be a total disaster without Gleeson. He made me watch this movie from the beginning to the end. The film represents a satirical vision of country that is cracked in pieces. Te country is full of moral low people doing drugs, leading free sexual lives, lying, killing and drinking. The film shows 7 days the lead character has before he will be killed because he is just the good one as everyone around is crooked and ‘dirty’. I was impressed by the way the priest gave his life into god’s hands and didn’t run away being threatened to be killed. I admired the power of will and spirit in this person. For those, who are interested in action and fun movies this movie will leave them indifferent. To me I wouldn’t have watched it if not the Gleeson’s perfect performance. My husband doesn’t like the movie very much though.

‘Calvary’ worryingly treads close to the theater work of John Michael McDonagh's younger sibling, and never quite lives up to such lofty standards

The film presents us with a satirical vision of a country that is cracked and fractured into pieces, a crazy-paving that isn't fitting together. Without the powerfully charismatic Gleeson, I suspect, the film itself wouldn't fit together.
