As the title itself has to say, this movie is all about chocolate. It can cause people to get together, to rejoice, to enjoy in life, to find love, almost anything. It starts off with a small sleepy town, Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, a cute little place in France. On one morning Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) and her 6 year old daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol) come to this town. After Vianne's husband, Anouk's father left them, two of them were on their own. Here, they decide to open up a small chocolate shop with their own home-made chocolate. Unfortunately, they have arrived into town in the time where the townspeople do their yearly religious fest, Lent, when they don't eat chocolate or do any kind of tempting things. Because of the really bad timing, Vianne and her daughter find themselves in an unusual situation, where they are either loved or hated by the townspeople. At one point, she meets a strange man that lives in a boat by the river, Roux (Johnny Depp) and falls in love with him. With him on her side, half of the townspeople supporting her and the other against her along with the mayor Comte de Reynaud (Alfred Molina), Vienna and her daughter manage to fit in somehow.
