From the mind and directing skills of Lars von Trier comes an outstanding masterpiece- Dancer in the Dark. The movie is, according to various critics, very hard to describe and put into words, because it portrays so many everyday emotions people never think about describing. The story begins in America, in 1964, as one of the young women from Central Europe Selma Jezkova (Björk) comes to a big American city. She has a young 12 year old son and they are both suffering from a disease which will leave them totally blind in the end. But, since he is a lot younger, Selma works day and night in order to be able to afford him the treatment. She will certainly go blind and there is nothing more for her to be done, but her son still has a chance. And where does she get the strength from? How does she do that? Being a single mom and struggling with a disease like that is far away from easy thing. The answer to this is- she loves musicals. As she says: "I used to dream that I was in a movie, because nothing dreadful happens there". Caught up in her own dreams, Selma soon becomes one of the starts of her own music production.
