What is the movie Ed Wood about?
“Ed Wood” is a 1994 biopic about the life of cult filmmaker Ed Wood, sometimes called “the worst director of all time”. It was directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, and stars Johnny Depp. The film covers the part of Wood’s life when he made his best known movies, as well as his relationship with the famous horror movie actor Bela Lugosi. At the beginning of the movie, Ed Wood is trying to break into the movie industry. Upon reading that producer George Weiss wants to purchase the rights to the story of Christine Jorgensen, the first famous trans woman in America, he approaches him and offers himself as the director, due to himself being a transvestite. He is rejected by Weiss, and later that day he meets his longtime idol Bela Lugosi and befriends him. Later he manages to convince wise to let him direct the movie, now called “Glen or Glenda”. Upon its release, the film is a critical and commercial failure, and Ed struggles to finance his next project called “Bride of the Atom”. Ed, himself an eccentric, is surrounded by a cast of bizarre characters, and in his film making he employs an ad hoc, “anything goes” technique. His amateurish, heavily improvised film is met with furious rejection, and Ed’s unswerving optimism is finally shaken. He has to struggle with random financiers and their odd requests, and one day he’s had enough. He goes to a bar for a drink and there he meets his hero Orson Welles, who encourages him to keep chasing his vision.
