From the first time you get to see Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) you can tell that there is something different about him, but can't say with certainty what exactly. Today he is known under another name- Russell Edwin Nash. Why? Because he is immortal and needs to cover his true identity. The movie is telling his story, how he became what he is and how he deals with that. It all begins in the Highlands of Scotland in 1518, when he was born. And unlike other kids, he was born different- immortal from the beginning. After the villagers noticed that his family had died and his wife as well, but he remained the same, they banished him from the village, believing that he had a pact with the devil. During his wandering he met another like himself- a Highlander, how they call themselves, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery). From him Connor got the information about who and what he is, what their destiny is and how to beat the rest. Because, there is a danger that someone might kill him for the "Prize"- being mortal again. Juan Sanchez taught him how to fight with a sword, because the only way to defeat a Highlander is to take off his head with a sword. And there is only one rule: there can be only one.
