Richard Brooks wrote, produced and directed “In Cold Blood” and adaptation of Truman Capote’s non -fiction novel of the same name, which retells the events surrounding the murder of the Clutter family by Perry Smith and Dick Hickock (played by Robert Blake and Scott Wilson respectively). Smith and Hickock, two ex cons living in Arkansas, hatch a “fool proof” plan to rob the Clutter family of their wealth. Their plan doesn’t work out as well as they were hoping it would, and they end up killing the four members of the Clutter family (husband, wife and two teenage children). When the bodies are found the next day, the murderers flee for Mexico, but soon they are back in the States, going to Las Vegas to try and win some money. The not too bright criminals are arrested in Vegas for parole violation, driving a stolen car and passing bad checks. When the police detectives try to confront them with the evidence of their part in the Clutter murders, they both deny their involvement, but when the detectives lie to them that they left a live witness, Hickock breaks down and spills the beans. Ultimately, they are both convicted of the murders and sentenced to death by hanging.
