What is the movie Jacky in Women's Kingdom about?
Jacky lives in quite an interesting country, where everything seems to be upside down. A young man is the citizen of the Kingdom of Bubunne. This place is notable for its different morals and traditions – here men are obliged to wear veils, stay at home and do all domestic tasks. Women have incredible power in this country, while men are completely powerless. Jacky is in love with Colonelle and he dreams about marrying her. However it not that simple for an ordinary guy – Colonelle is the daughter of the country’s head executor. He gets a chance to win the heart of his beloved girl when the head executor announces a ball, organized in order to find a husband for her daughter. Jacky is determined to attend the ball, seduce Colonelle and marry her. He truly loves the girl and aims to “live happily ever after”. But in order to fulfill his plan, he needs to get rid of the rigid president, Colonelle’s mother.

The film is simple, I would say even too simple for me. The actors are good and the characters are credible. The images are well shot, and some strange places shot in the movie makes us wonder if they were incredibly real or fake.
I recommend watching the movie because it is special and unique, but I would probably not watch it again.

Over-sensitive Islamists will cry ridicule, yet the Syrian-born Sattouf skewers all sexist and absolutist notions.
