What is the movie Melancholia about?
“Melancholia” represents an apocalyptical drama. The movie consists of the two parts, entitled by the names of the two sisters, the story revolves around: Justine and Claire. The first part of the movie shows Justine and Michael are getting married and have a wealthy wedding party at Justine’s sister, Claire and her husband’s castle-like house. The expensive party turns a failure as the sister’s divorced parents have an open fight and the bride estranges from everyone, including her husband to find out the brightest star, called Antares, disappeared from the sky. Michael leaves and the marriage is called off. In the second part, Justine gets severely depressed and is dependable on her sister Claire in most of the everyday things, like washing, eating, etc. However, with the new planet, named ‘Melancholia’, a colossal planet, which eclipsed Antares in the first part of the film, approaching the Earth and threatening to collide with it, thus destroying it, Justine gets calm and the relationship between the two sisters gets inverted, making self-assured, cheerful Clair depend on her sister, looking for a psychological comfort before the impending apocalypses…

Animal fear is exactly the feeling that i had during watching this movie. I had the feeling that i could not control with the help of my brain. Richard Wagner was so beautiful and at the same time evil ( by the way Hitler loved him), performance made by Kirsten Dunst was also an amazing one ( well as usually)! This movie has become a great pressure for me, as i can swear that every single part of my body was crying because of it. But most of all this movie "caught" my attention due to the fact that it made me thinking about myself, about human behavior and relationships, and of course about the eternal things. I liked how light everything was brought to me, no one tried to impose some opinion, i was simply given a lot of things to think about, the possibility to realize everything and make some conclusions of my own. That is difficult and requires a lot of emotional strain. But it really worthies.

I cannot give a certain description to this movie, that is why i will rather keep it in my small collection of masterpiece movies which i will never watch again for anything in the world, as it will be too much for me.
This movie goes very slowly, same as Wagner's music from "Tristan and Isolde" like it shows that those are the last moments for every human being on this Earth. Mother's feet are drowning in the grass while she being full of despair and sorrow tries to save her own child.
This movie is all about lack of understanding between people, about a mother who doesn't understand her daughters and is a stranger to them, about a father who is weak and has lack of attention towards his family. I got the feeling that in this movie the word love had a completely different meaning, they loved each other because they should, but not because that was something they felt.

It happened! Finally i got the chance to cry as much as i can and want! Lately i practically was not able to cry at all, i didn't even cry while reading some breathtaking deaths of beloved heroes in poems, or blood with which i had to deal the other week, and even life's unfair things were not able to make me cry. Somi decided to watch the movie Melancholia due to the advice of a friend of mine, i got sick with her talking about this movie again and again so i made myself comfy on the couch and started watching it. I can definitely say that it is one of the best movies i have ever seen in my life, so i am very grateful to every single person that has worked on it. This movie is about the situation when there is no way out, and that is something that really hurts, when you have no power at all, and you cannot do anything, when money, knowledge and power do not matter anymore. And all you need is humility, which is so hard to do as not every person can proudly admit to have it. For me it is even sick thinking that there are things in life i cannot influence upon.

It is a modern masterpiece of the cinema.

I have to say that Melancholia is another Von Trier film that I come away from feeling like my senses have been shaken and my ideas, thoughts and perspective tested. I like that. I like Lars Von Trier also.
