John Schlesinger’s 1969 drama “Midnight Cowboy” holds the distinction of being the only X rated movie ever to win an Academy Award for the best picture. It is considered an absolute American cinema classic, one of the greatest American films ever made. Based on the novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy, the script won an Oscar for the best adapted screenplay, and the award trifecta was rounded out by Schlesinger receiving an Oscar for his direction. “Midnight Cowboy” pairs Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman as a pair of New York City hustlers. Joe Buck (Voight) is first seen working as a dish washer in Texas. He buys a cowboy suit and quits his job, planning to make a living as a gigolo in New York. After a bumpy start in NY, Joe meets Enrico Salvatore Rizzo (Hoffman), nicknamed “Ratso”, a crippled small time con man who quickly screws him out of 20 dollars. Joe is broke and locked out of his apartment,. Most of his belongings impounded, and when he tracks down Ratso he moves in with him and the two become “business partners”. Things seem to be looking up for Joe when he manages to get a foothold in the artsy New York scene, but Ratso’s already poor health deteriorates even further and he is forced to take some desperate measures in order to get the money to send him to Florida and fulfill his lifelong dream of living in Miami.
