Considered the best film adaptation of the historic events of the mutiny on the HMS Bounty, “Mutiny on the Bounty” was directed by Frank Lloyd and stars Clark Gable and Charles Laughton as the film’s antagonists. HMS Bounty is on a long journey to Tahiti with a mission to obtain a cargo of breadfruit plants. The ship’s commander is Captain Bligh (Laughton), a merciless, ruthless tyrant who runs his ship with strict discipline, never shying away from a good flogging and other harsh measures of maintaining discipline. His behavior is so extreme that even the ship’s first mate Fletcher Christian grows dissatisfied with his superior’s behavior. Still, the crew stays loyal to Captain Bligh and they safely make it to Tahiti. Fletcher and his friend Byam (Franchot Tone), a midshipman, enjoy their time off in the tropical paradise and befriend a pair of native beauties Maimiti and Tehhani. After a long time spent enjoying the sandy beaches, the sun and the waves, the return to HMS Bounty and Captain Bligh’s tyrannical rule stand in stark contrast with the paradise they left behind. The sailors grow more and more dissatisfied with each passing day, until Flethser Christian finally leads a mutiny against the cruel Captain. The mutineers grab control of the ship and send Captain Bligh and a handful of those still loyal to him adrift on a boat. Then they make their way back to Tahiti to spend the remainder of their days in blissful idleness. Despite all odds, Captain Bligh survives his watery ordeal, and he eventually makes it back to Tahiti on the trail of the mutineers, desperate to exact his revenge on those who have betrayed him.
