What is the movie Shirley: Visions of Reality about?
The film brings to life 13 paintings of Edward Hopper and helps us observe an era in American history through contemplations, emotions, and thoughts of a woman. Shirley lets us explore America in the 1930s, ‘40s, ‘50s, and early ‘60s. It is worth noting that she is no ordinary woman – she wishes to change the course of history with her socio-political and professional involvement. Shirley doesn’t accept the sad and appalling reality of the WWII, Depression years, the McCarthy era, civil rights campaigns and race conflicts. She is known as a woman whose work as an actress has introduced her to staging of reality, shaping and questioning it. She didn’t look for stardom, but on the contrary strived to give social potency to theatre. She didn’t identify herself with the traditional role model of a wife, though it was a natural way of thinking during that historical period. Shirley was looking for a reliable life partner, not a husband who would own her. She was never compromised in moments of her professional crisis: if she had to take on menial jobs to provide for herself, she would never be ashamed of that. She had to go through a private crisis, and chose her life partner over her own professional interest.

To my mind this is a very odd film. Odd might be an understatement and I am sure I didn't completely get what the idea of movie was. Nevertheless, I was mesmerized by the different settings, by the way the actors performed, by the colors, well, in one word, by everything! It is hard to talk about something, that was clearly inspired by paintings, though I couldn't tell you which ones. It's not really a structure to be seen, so that fact alone will not get too many people engaged into watching it. You need to be in the mood for this and the mood should be special to understand this, IMHO.

A very odd movie … odd might be an understatement and I am sure I didn't completely comprehend what it was trying to tell me and the audience. Nevertheless. I was still mesmerized by the different settings, by the way the actors behaved, by the colors, honestly, just by everything.
