When you see Whitney Houston, CeeLo Green and Jordin Sparks in the casting crew list, you know that you can expect a high quality musical coming on. The movie is a remarkable remake of a 1976 film that was pretty popular amongst black audience at the time. The story of the movie sets back in 1968 in Detroit. One of the main characters is Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), who is just a young and shy religious girl. She lives with her mother Emma (Whitney Houston), her sister Sister (Carmen Ejogo) and her step sister Dolores (Tika Sumter). Sparkle is pretty talented and is getting hard time in trying to break through as a song writer and a singer. With their mother not agreeing on public performances, the three of them sneak out in a club and do an amazing trio with Sister as a lead singer and Sparkle and Dolores as her back up singers. Soon, they get overwhelmed by fame and they try to deal with their mother, who is also a former singer, but is a bit bitter and jaded, and lives only to serve God. In all this chaos, boys are added to a mix. Sister falls in love with an evil stand-up comedian Satin, the trio slowly begins to fall apart and girls aren't in great relationships as they were before. Will they be able to stay close in spite of the fame and pressure?
