If you have read the novel written by Edith Wharton, this movie adaptation will certainly be one of your favourites. If not, it will still manage to captivate your attention for more than two hours, because it'll give you a glimpse into the past. The story is placed in a 19th century in New York. Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis) is a young lawyer and is one of the most desirable bachelors at the time. But, all the ladies get very sad when there is an announcement that he is engaged to be married to May Welland (Winona Ryder). She is surely a pretty lucky girl. At one point, Newland gets to meet one of the May's cousins, lady Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), who seems to be creating chaos wherever she goes. What is the story with her? She is getting a divorce from her very abusive husband and that causes the whole disruption in the society, because a woman can't be alone, little less divorced. And when the whole society is living by some stuck up rules, she is living by her own rules. Soon, Newland finds himself falling in love with Ellen and his fiancé May is somehow left behind. Is the society going to do the same with him as they did with Ellen? Will he manage to be with Ellen in the end or is it just an affair that will make him lose everything?
