What is the movie The Babadook about?
“The Babadook” is a recent Australian horror film. It’s been six years since Amelia’s husband died violently. Now she tries to discipline her six year old son Samuel who seems to be out of control. For some reason she finds it difficult to love her son. The boy’s dreams are plagued by some monster and he really believes that he is coming to kill them both. One day they find a book about some creepy thing called Babadook and Samuel thinks that it is the very creature he’s been dreaming about. They start reading that book and mother doesn’t take Samuel’s words seriously. She is convinced that his imagination is playing tricks on him. Right until the moment she starts feeling that their house is haunted by that thing. She starts to see glimpses of the creature herself and slowly realizes that the evil thing her son has been warning her about may be real. Amelia tries to get some help at the neighbor’s and at the police office but nobody believes her. Slowly she starts to go crazy because Babadook is no longer hiding. He’s coming for her and her son.

I'm no fan of horror movies but this one delivers a convincingly powerful study in domestic havoc.

Jennifer Kent's clever, thoroughly satisfying and neatly unsettling debut feature is about a kind of haunting, but of who or what? This is the question that simmers throughout the film.
