Written by James D. Solomon, the story about the murder of the well known American president Abraham Lincoln and the persons who were behind it all is more than just captivating. It begins with the murder of the president Lincoln in the theatre during one of the performances. When the gunshot was heard by the rest of the audience and caused a big chaos inside the theatre, the murderer had jumped into the crowd, yelling "sic semper tyrannis" (thus always to tyrants). Since the police doesn't have a clue who that was or where he went to, they start the investigation. All over the country people were in grief. Edwin Stanton (Kevin Kline), who was the Secretary of War, was obligated to renounce taking revenge on those who conspired in this murder. After several days of search, police officers have found man called Booth, the one who they found to be the murder, hiding in a barn. He was shot and seven other people, who were suspected to be co-conspirators, were arrested and put on trial. Among these seven people was woman named Mary Suratt (Robin Wright). She was trialled by military court, where the regular rules don't apply. One man was brave enough to take this case into his hands and defend her- Senator Reverdy Johnson (Tom Wilkinson). He was a former U. S. Attorney General and he agreed to look into her case. But, since he is from South and was afraid that people might have the wrong idea, he hired his friend Frederick Aiken (James McEvoy). After some investigation, he reveals that she really had nothing to do with that, but that her son was one of them.
