What is the movie The Conversation about?
Written, produced and directed by Francis Ford Copola, “The Conversation” was a critical success overshadowed only by another Copola’s movie of the year 1974 – “The Godfather II”. In this psychological thriller Gene Hackman stars as Harry Caul, a socially dysfunctional surveillance expert. Caul is a surveillance industry savant, highly respected in his line of work. He is also private to the point of paranoia: he has a nondescript appearance, his apartment lacks any personal touches other than his work equipment, his work is hidden behind a forest of locks and alarms, he uses payphones for conversations, etc. Privately he is unable or unwilling to make personal connections, unable to mix it with the crowds and withdrawn in more intimate surroundings. He is obsessed with his work for which he claims he has no moral dilemmas, although we see him overwrought with guilt over a past surveillance assignment that resulted in the deaths of three people. Caul and his associates are tasked with a nearly impossible task of recording the conversation of a young couple in a busy public square. He achieves this by using recording devices located in various places around the square, and then filtering the surrounding noises to reconstruct the conversation. As we see him gradually piecing the conversation together over the course of the film, Caul becomes more and more concerned about the safety of the couple he followed> Looking to prevent the worst from happening, he gets involved deeper and deeper into a situation which he doesn’t quite understand.

Coppola may have made films of a more spectacular nature but here he makes a virtue of a introversion - so that the film's horror moment is all the more vibrantly terrible when set in relief.

A fantastically plotted and acted paranoid thriller which features Gene Hackman's best performance in his highly decorated career as a lonely surveillance pro who finds himself in a dilemma when he suspects the people he is listening in on might be targeted to be killed at some point soon. Francis Ford Coppola had potentially the best movie year of any director ever in the history of cinema, nailing "The Godfather Part II" as well as this splendid piece, which is suspenseful all the way through and fittingly tragic seeing what happens to Hackman's character. A terrific film, and one that should definitely be seen.
