Getting married to the man of her dreams is what every girl dreams of from the time she's old enough to hear about fairy tales. Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt) has the same dream. After she had met Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) and dated him for a year, he proposed and she was more than eager to marry him. As they both live in San Francisco, as well as their families, they couldn't be happier to have them all close and ready for the wedding. But in the middle of the whole planning, Violet gets notified that she was accepted to a Michigan university for a post doctorate studies as an experimental psychologist and that should last for two years. After those two years, she gets her contract extended for another two years, and Tom, her fiancé couldn't be more irritated, because the life he's living is not the one he wanted. As he is running out of patience, and the wedding keeps getting delayed, things start to get a lot more complicated and they aren't happy at all. Now, they must decide if they are going to make it work or not. Throughout the whole process we see them get from one funny situation to another and then in another.
