What is the movie The Lady Vanishes about?
The box office success of ”The Lady Vanishes”, second to last movie Alfred Hitchcock made in the Great Britain, helped pave the way for his subsequent successful Hollywood career. This 1938 comedy thriller stars Margaret Lockwood as Iris Henderson, a beautiful English tourist visiting the fictional country of Bandrika. When an avalanche blocks the railroad Iris and some other passengers have to spend the night in a Bandrikan hotel before continuing their travels in the morning. Unbeknownst to them, a man is killed in front of the hotel. The group proceeds with their train ride tomorrow morning. After some shenanigans, including Iris being hit on the head by a planter and blacking out before boarding the train, an elderly lady from the group simply vanishes. Everyone else is pretending not to remember her, everyone but Gilbert (Michael Redgrave), a young musicologist who decides to help her search for the missing lady. They soon find themselves in mortal danger, trapped in a web of international spy games, with many dangers lurking on the train. Iris and Gilbert need to find and save the old lady, and eventually deliver an important message to the British Foreign Office. With the odds stacked against them, can the unlikely pairing find their way to safety and ensure the well being of their nation?

The shocking thing about this movie is even though it was done in 1938, the style, technique, can be seen in virtually every action or thriller you see today. Hitch also does a great job with playing with stereotypical conventions of males and females, aggressions as far as not utilizing the typical things women can do or say within a movie. He also had a faint comedic element which made the suspense portions all the more intense. His camera technique regarding his shots was very claustrophobic which led you as a viewer to wonder was there even a lady present? this choice of shooting this way also allows us as viewers to question why this lady hasn't been found since the space appears to be so confined. This was an absolutely wonderful edge of your seat picture with an ending where mostly all of the loose end are tied tight!

A cracking plot, sparkling dialogue, great characters and sublime direction make The Lady Vanishes an all-time must see.
Marking the peak of Hitchcock's British period, it is an exquisitely crafted, finely wrought, cinematic treasure, boasting a cast which reads like a veritable Who's who of British acting talent from the Golden Age of British Cinema.
While the director, writers and supporting cast all deserve credit, the film very much belongs to its leading lady, the lovely Margaret Lockwood, who, as feisty heroine Iris Henderson, somehow manages to be heart-stopping beautiful, supremely sexy, spirited, cute and adorably vulnerable all at the same time! Now where can I meet a girl like that?
The Lady Vanishes is, for every reason, but especially because of Miss Lockwood, the very best of the very best; a landmark movie which you truly cannot miss!
