A rather philosophical 2007 science fiction film written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Richard Schenkman, ”The Man From Earth” was noted for the use of peer to peer networks for its distribution and word of mouth promotion. David Lee Smith stars as John Oldman, a university professor claiming to be over 14,000 years old. At the beginning of the film we see professor Oldman packing his things onto a truck in preparation for moving. He is leaving his university posts and his soon to be former colleagues, along with one student, gather to bid him farewell. His friends and associates are surprised that he is leaving seemingly without any reason, and they begin to question him. After dodging the questions for a while, Oldman eventually begins to tell the cockamamie tale of how he is a proper prehistoric caveman who has spent 14 millenniums on Earth. He continues to detail his story, explaining how he moves from one place to the next every 20 years so he would not be recognized as who he really is. His colleagues are incredulous at first, not sure if Oldman is just pulling them by the nose or if her truly believes it. They start asking him questions from their fields of expertise – biology, history, art history. Oldman claims to have known historical figures like Christopher Columbus and Van Gogh, whose original painting he supposedly owns. When his psychiatrist friend threatens to put him under psychiatric evaluation if he doesn't admit that it is all a hoax, Oldman tells them he was just kidding. The farewell party slowly departs, but it is clear that some of Oldman's colleagues are shaken by his surprisingly convincing story, and some of them need to know more.
