This 1940 romantic comedy directed George Cukor has Katharine Hepburn playing a wealthy Philadelphia socialite torn between three romantic suitors. Hepburn is joined by a pair of two biggest stars of the time, Cary Grant and James Stewart. It was a critical and commercial success, reviving Hepburn’s big screen career and receiving six Academy Nominations, winning two. Audrey Hepburn plays Tracy Samantha Lord Haven, a Philadelphia socialite set to marry George Kittredge (John Howard), a wealthy man who lacks her social pedigree. She is also divorced from C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), a charming member of her own high class beloved by her family who she didn’t deem worthy enough of her. The wedding is a major social event, and Sidney Kidd (Henry Daniell), the editor of Spy magazine, contacts Dexter, his former employee, in order to help infiltrate his journalist Mike Connor (Stewart) onto the wedding as the guest of the family. Tracy spends some time with Mike and grows to respect him. She also has Dexter back in the picture, and with her wedding coming nearer and nearer she finds herself torn between three men. With the wedding ceremony set to begin and the guests arriving, she breaks off the engagement with George after he has a jealous fit. The guests are there, everything is prepared, but Tracy finds herself without a groom. Will any other of her suitors step up to the plate?
