Every journalist is in the search for THE story of his life. Steve Lopez is currently in that kind of mood. After a bike accident, he has had his face totally disfigured. And that didn't hurt at all in comparison with the fact that he has no idea what to write about. Accidentally he comes across a homeless guy who is a street musician. He only has his violin with two strings and the clothes he is wearing, but his music is so different and perfect. So, Steve sets out to find out more about this strange guy. After getting some information about him, like that his name is Nathaniel Ayers and that he was one of the most gifted students of the cello in the Juilliard, one of the most prestigious music schools ever. Inspired by his life story, Steve writes a series of articles about this fantastic homeless guy and soon there is a lot of fame coming his way. But, at the same time, he realizes that Nathaniel is also having some mental problems and has a lot of inner demons to deal with. And as the pressure rises and lots of people surround him, Nathaniels problems become greater and greater. Steve now must find the way to help him and be his friend most of all.
