What is the movie The Suspicions of Mr Whicher about?
Some of the best movies were those made by detective novels and stories. This one is no exception. The book itself was written by Kate Summerscale, then adapted into a movie screenplay by Neil McKay, and finally directed by James Hawes. The story revolves around a detective who is investigating a murder of a three year old boy in Wiltshire. It all starts in 1860 when a Scotland Yard detective Jack Whicher (Paddy Considine) is invited by a local police to help them investigate the horrific murder of a three year old Saville Kent. Of course, the suspicion falls onto the boy's nanny, Elizabeth Gough (Kate O'Flynn), who was in the room at the time the murder happened. As the detective Whicher sniffs around, he comes to a conclusion that she really is innocent. But, the person that raises his suspicion is the boy's sister, Constance (Alexandra Roach) and it is partially confirmed as they find a part of a woman's night gown covered in dirt and blood and after Constance reveals that her night gown is missing. But, what is the motive for that? Constance is Kent's daughter from the first marriage, and she, as well as her younger brother William, hate their new stepmom, and their nanny, with whom their father had an affair with. And it all starts to unravel from that point on. Detective Whicher arrests her, but since he is unable to get a confession from her and the whole village seems to be sure that she is innocent, he finds himself in a difficult position.

The story in this movie was developing in a different way, not the way it usually happens in the books and movies- there is one more reminder that the book was written based on the real events. I had a lot of thoughts during reading the movie, and even after finishing reading it i still had a lot of thoughts. Anyway there were much more feelings and deep impressions than from reading a regular detective. Though the boring part of the movie, didn’t made it more captivating, and it is a very gentle way of calling it!
There were a lot of controversial thoughts after reading the book, the criminal had to have a chance to be forgiven, as not having the chance to be punished will bring to a new criminal action. It is a awful crime in the modern world of the criminals, and of course in the families of rich people it is much easier to get rid of a crime, than in the world of poor people.

This is a movie about the family of a little victim, how the investigation about death was going on, and how the trial was finished. It is not a typical detective story, as it was built on the basis on true events! The author of the scenario has shown too many details of it, probably that is why it was so boring for me to watch the movie. Even the weather was mentioned in the story and the clothes of people around. But the good thing is that as in any good story, bad people were punished in the end!
The only interesting detail for me was the process of interrogation, which was typical for those times. The local police was stupid, and there was a serious lack of professional skills in the police department! Mr Whicher was the only smart character in the movie, i kept respecting him no matter what! i realized who was the killer for some time, but unfortunately by the end of the movie it wasn’t clear to me whether it was him or not!

I read the book on the basis of which this movie has been filmed, and i can say that it is very unusual! It is mostly unusual due to the way how thoroughly the author was gathering the various details about moments times and events, and how she tried to make a good detective from all the stories that she was able to find. I can say that unfortunately Kate Summerscale didn’t succeed in that, as she is boring and there is too much of her, but the things that are beign revealed in the movie really deserve all the efforts made to watch the movie. In the middle of the nineteenth century in England has happened a terrible murder, from the house of a ordinary family that was living on the medium level and in which there were a lot of children and a few servants a child was kidnapped. And this three years old child was found quite soon, but being dead. I can say that no matter the fact that the book is much more interesting for me, still i enjoyed the movie and recommend it to everyone!
