Mickey Rourke delivers the role of a lifetime in this runaway drama hit of the 2008 movie season. Written by Robert D. Siegel and directed by Darren Aronofsky . “The Wrestler” is a powerful story about an aging wrestler trying to hold on to the last remnants of his glorious past. Robin Ramzinski, known as Randy “The Ram” Robinson, is a past his prime professional wrestler who saw his heyday in the 80’s, but now has to fight in small, independently run contests in New Jersey. He also works part-time at a supermarket under a jerk boss who keeps taunting him about his wrestling career. He befriends an also past her prime stripper (Marisa Tomei). After winning a local match Randy is presented with a chance to fight his wrestling Nemesis “The Ayatollah” on the 20th anniversary of their last match. Seeing this as his chance to get back into the majors, Randy trains arduously and injects steroids, which leads to a heart attack and coronary bypass surgery. On his doctor’s advice he gives up wrestling, and then tries to restore his relationship with a daughter he abandoned a long time ago. However, the ghosts of his past won’t let him be, and after a night of binge drinking and taking drugs he ends up rescheduling his rematch with “The Ayatollah”. To the dismay of his daughter and his stripper friend he goes through with the match, and suffers another heart attack in the ring. Still, he refuses to cut the match short and goes for his signature finishing move, a diving head butt from the ropes. The film ends leaving his fate open to interpretation.
