But, one winter, she dies of asthma and young Nigel is left to himself and his pretty distant father. Soon after, his father hires a cleaning lady, Mrs. Joan Potter (Helena Bonham Carter). Just as he thought things can't possibly be worse, he finds out that his father is getting remarried to this "commoner", the cleaning lady,Mrs. Potter. With Joan being a fantastic cook, Nigel gets an opponent who makes it difficult to win his father's heart over. With being the only boy in his cooking class, Nigel struggles with lots of things when it comes to finding a true love and fitting in, but after a weekend job in a pub, where he meets an older guy and falls for him, he gets a support that he needs.
