In the State of California, there is a section of California’s Welfare and Institutions Code known as 5150 hold. It signifies an involuntary psychiatric hold of a person evaluated as dangerous to herself/himself or others. When that happens, an authorized officer or clinician can involuntarily hold a person deemed to have a mental disorder. Several celebrities have been placed on a 5150 hold. Check them out.

In January 2008, Britney Spears was taken to UCLA medical center after a source claims she was “driving around her neighborhood like a madwoman.” Years later, we found out she was taken by ambulance after she locked herself in a bathroom and took several prescription pills. Spears was placed on lockdown for a mental evaluation after she locked herself in a room with one of her children at her L.A. home and refused to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline. “She had already put Preston in the car when Britney locked herself in a room with Jayden,” a source said at the time. “The cops came and got through the door and tied her down to a gurney.”

Mischa Barton was placed under a 5150 in July 2009 when police arrived at her house for a “medical issue.” Mischa then later tried to claim she was put under psych evaluation because she had a tooth infection and is afraid of needles. Apparently, she also got into a fight with a nurse during her hospitalization. At the time, Barton’s friends were telling the newspapers that after three days of non-stop partying they got extremely scared that Mischa might hurt herself that they called the police. “Mischa Barton was so high on coke following a marathon three-day bender that friends called cops afraid she would kill herself”, sources told The Post. Last year, in an interview with People magazine, Mischa spoke about the incident. “I was never suicidal,” she said. “I was just overworked and depressed. But one slip of the tongue in a heightened moment and you find yourself in that situation.”

In November 2009, David Hasselhoff was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after allegedly drinking a large amount of alcohol. However, the Baywatch star denied the claims. Hasselhoff has been battling alcoholism for years and has been hospitalized at least five times with alcohol poisoning.

Charlie Sheen’s ex-wife was placed under a 5150 hold at the UCLA Medical Center last May. It happened just days before child protective services took away her and Charlie’s sons. “Brooke was taken to the medical center, after she was deemed to be a threat to herself and to others,” a source close to the Mueller family told RadarOnline.com. “She had been using drugs for days and was not in her right mind. It was a very sad, sad situation. Once Brooke was admitted, her doctors notified the Department of Children and Family Services and action was taken by the agency immediately to get her children legally out of her care.”

In June 2013 Nick Stahl was placed on psychiatric hold after a friend transported him to the hospital around 3 a.m. TMZ reported it was “unclear why,” but mentioned Stahl’s troubled history with drugs and alcohol. When TMZ caught up with the Terminator 3 actor shortly after his release from the hold, he said “stress” and “life problems” led to the hold, and that “it was helpful.”

In July 2013, Amanda Bynes was hospitalized on a 5150 hold after allegedly starting a small fire in the driveway of a house in her hometown of Thousand Oaks, California. In conversations with police, the actress reportedly gave answers so bizarre that the officials ruled she met the criteria for the 5150 hold. Captain Don Aguilar of Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said at the time: “Amanda Bynes was involved in a disturbance in a residential neighborhood last night in Thousand Oaks in the 200-block of Avenida De Los Arboles. Deputies investigated the incident and determined that she met the criteria of 5150 California Welfare & Institutions Code. She was detained and taken for a mental health evaluation. Ventura County Fire Dept. also responded to this incident in reference to a report of a gas can on fire in a driveway.” After that Amanda entered a psychiatric treatment facility, and her mother, Lynn, was granted conservatorship of the 26-year-old actress. In recent months, she has been attending college classes in design while continuing treatment.
