According to the statistics, about 44% of marriages in the USA end in divorce. When it comes to celebrities, the rates might be even higher, with many famous people having been through not one, but two or more divorces. And with all the media scrutiny various juicy details make the whole situation even nastier. Here are some of the ugliest celebrity divorces.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries
The wedding seen ’round the world turned into a divorce, just 72 days later. Kim’s split from NBA player Humphries got more and more twisted with each day as Humphries tried his hardest to prove his ex-wife was just a fraud who only married him for ratings.
Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen
The breakup of this marriage was without a doubt one of the ugliest Hollywood has ever seen. After three years of marital bliss, Richards filed a petition for divorce in 2005 alleging that Sheen was unfaithful, abusive and addicted to both pornography and prostitutes. Soon thereafter, we heard a voicemail message left by Sheen telling his estranged wife to “rot in ******* hell” and read emails that called her a “sad, jobless f**k.” However, the two have managed to patch things up and today they are good friends.
Christie Brinkley and Peter Cook
After nearly 10 years of marriage, Brinkley filed for divorce soon after she learned of Cook’s affair with his then-18-year-old assistant Diana Bianchi. This breakup started ugly anyway, but it got even nastier when Brinkley pushed for public coverage of the trial. During proceedings, with accusations that Brinkley ransacked Cook’s office, copied his hard drive and scratched his face out of family photos, Cook’s attorneys tried to portray Brinkley as a bitter, angry woman.
Many speculate that Tom Cruise married Katie Holmes in order to squash gay rumors, but the marriage ended due to Katie’s fear for her daughter’s involvement in the Church of Scientology. Neither have ever given a reason for the split but rumors persist Holmes was unhappy with the control the religion Scientology had over the family and many nasty details about the church have surfaced. “It was something she accepted and put up with for many years because it was important to Tom and, for that reason, important to her,” a source close to Holmes told E! News last year. “But over the past year, they had started to see things differently, and she was beginning to pull away.”
Terrence Howard and Michelle Ghent
Howard’s latest divorce (his third) turned out to be his messiest, with the exes accusing each other of physical abuse, racial slurs and threats. A judge ordered Howard to steer clear of his ex-wife after she claimed the actor “sucker punched” and kicked her during a fight in Costa Rica. “While I was on the ground, he kicked me repeatedly in the head and shoulders with strong blows,” she said. “I knew I had to get away from him or he would try to kill me.”
After seven years of marriage, Basinger and Baldwin separated in 2000 and were divorced two years later. Basinger alleged emotional and physical abuse while Baldwin’s brother Billy came to his defense, calling Basinger a “nutcase.” All that was nothing compared to the custody battle over their daughter, Ireland. After the couple initially agreed to share custody, Basinger allegedly violated the conditions of Baldwin’s visitation rights. But then things really flared up in 2007 when a tape of a message left by Baldwin for his then-11-year-old daughter was released to the media. On the message, he called his daughter a number of names when she missed a prearranged phone call with him.
Heather Mills and Paul McCartney
In 2006, after four years together, the couple headed to divorce court. Mills went on the attack calling McCartney abusive and violent, as well as a drug abuser. But the British press came to Sir Paul’s defense and labeled Mills a high-class prostitute and a gold-digger. Even attorneys in the case felt all the nastiness of this divorce—during trial, Mills poured water over one of McCartney’s divorce lawyers.
Tony Parker and Eva Longoria
The couple met after a game and started dating soon after. But it didn’t take long for their marriage to begin hitting bumps, especially as a celebrity gossip website ran an interview with a woman who claimed she had slept with Parker. Longoria filed papers after discovering hundreds of sexts between her hubby and his teammate’s wife. After Parker’s deceit had been exposed, Longoria found herself wondering “‘Am I not sexy enough? Am I not pretty enough? Am I not smart enough?'” she said on The Conversation With Amanda de Cadenet in 2012.
Divorce is an unpleasant and sad happening in life of people and when divorce is ‘ugly’ then it is even worse. I think that celebrities should keep it private, or at lest try to keep it as private as it is possible – not giving interviews or any comments. Unfortunately, many make a PR of it and a show. Very sad such beautiful Hollywood couples divorce in such a shameful way!
