In an interview with Guardian, Tobey Maguire speaks about his career, drug addiction and growing up. The actor reveals that his family was very poor. He said: “As a kid, I was very poor. I slept on couches of relatives, and some night we wandered into a shelter. And I wanted to get out of that, so my ambition was initially to make money; I was pretty driven.”

Toby explains that despite all the problems he faced during his childhood and early youth he knew he was going to be successful. “I’m constantly reflecting on personal progress. And since I was around 15, I knew I’d be successful,” he said.
