When it comes to naming their babies, celebrities tend to be very creative. Or, should we say, a bit too creative, given that some of those kids really have bizarre monikers. Anyway, it seems that traditional names are not very interesting to famous people and here’s how stars explain the weird names they chose for their children.
Jason Lee – Pilot Inspektor
In 2005, the My Name Is Earl star told Entertainment Weekly that he named his boy after a song on the indie rock band Grandaddy’s 2000 album The Sophtware Slump. “The opening track, ‘He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot,’ absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it. It was from this track that my wife, Beth, came up with the name Pilot for our son.”
Kate Winslet – Bear Blaze Rocknroll
The Oscar-winning star welcomed her youngest child with husband Ned RocknRoll in December 2013 and named him Bear Blaze. “When I was pregnant with Mia and when I was pregnant with Joe, I didn’t name them before they came out because I always felt like I just have to see them and see who they’re going to be,” Kate said. “But, of course, this time around there’s Mia and Joe and the whole pregnancy is about what are we going to call the baby. So it was really lovely actually, they were very much included and we settled on Bear quite early on. A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear and I just had always really loved it. Bear’s second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically. The house burned down and we survived, but we wanted something of the fire and so Blaze was the name that we came up with. Bear Blaze.”
Nicole Kidman – Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban named their first daughter Sunday because it was their least favorite day of the week until they found each other. When they welcomed their second daughter, they named her Faith Margaret. “We needed to have that through the whole pregnancy,” Nicole explained. “That’s what it required was a lot of faith. Her name is Faith Margaret … People call her just Faith, but she’s actually Faith Margaret, that Southern double name. Margaret is my grandmother’s name. She had her last baby at 49, so she’s my inspiration.”
Kim Kardashian – North
Kim and Kanye shocked the world when they revealed they named their baby girl North West, but the reality star claims that she named her baby North because “it means higher power.”
Nicolas Cage – Kal-El
Nicolas Cage wanted to name his new baby son Kyle, but chose the name Kal-El after his wife Alice decided they should select something more exotic. The actor said: “My wife wanted a unique name and originally I thought of the name Kyle and then she said, ‘No, something more unusual and but beautiful.’ Then I remembered the old Superman comics and Kal-El was his original name on Krypton. So I wanted a name that stood for something good, was unique and American and that’s all three. I just thought it was a beautiful name and it had kind of a magical ring to it.”
Gwyneth Paltrow – Apple
In an interview with Hello! Magazine, Gwyneth explained the origin of her daughter’s name, Apple. She said: “My husband named her. I loved it straightway. I thought it was so unique and sounded cool, sweet, wholesome, clean and biblical. She is nearly eight now and it fits her so perfectly. I can’t imagine her being called anything else.”
Drew Barrymore – Olive
Drew Barrymore picked out her daughter Olive’s name when she was pregnant. Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actress said: “I never would have guessed that would have been the name. But I was reading a book with my husband. I was three months pregnant and they said your baby is the size of an olive, and that was it. We never looked back.”
Uma Thurman – Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence
Uma Thurman named her third child Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson. Uma says she and her partner, Arpad Busson, were struggling to pick a name so they just used all of the ones they like.
