“Before Sunrise”, the first part of director Richard Linklater's trilogy which also includes “Before Sunset” (2004) and “Before Midnight” (2013), tells the tale of two young strangers who meet on a train and spend a night together in Vienna. Jesse (Ethan Hawke) is a young American traveling by train to Vienna to catch a plain back to the States, and Celine (Julie Delpy) is traveling back to Paris on the same train. The two strike a conversation, and when they arrive to Vienna Jesse manages to convince Celine to get off the train and take the next one tomorrow morning. The entire film takes place over the course of one night, sine Jesse's plain leaves in the morning. The two form a strong bond quickly, knowing that they have only a short time together. They spend the night walking around Vienna and talking about nothing and everything, revealing intimate details from their lives and getting to know each other. As the night goes on and the morning grows nearer, both of them have to make a decision on what to do with this sudden and unexpected romance. Ultimately, as they are standing on the train station waiting for Celine's train to arrive, instead of making another rash decision they agree not to exchange any contact information, but to meet at the same place and at the same time in six months. “Before Sunset” sees Jesse and Celine reunite nine years later, and then again in “Before Midnight,” 18 years down the road.
