There were many ballerinas who wanted to become a part of this ballet, but they simply didn't get the chance for this or that reasons, it was a big deal for them and that adds drama to the whole plot.
Nina lives with her mother and she is desperate to become popular and do something with her life. This is her big break and she is totally committed to it no matter what.
Lily, on the other hand, is her rival and Nina feels like she is in danger and that soon she will lose her position.
That means that she has to give her best and show how good she is but while doing it, she goes through the emotional rolercoaster and we can also see her in a lesbian scene, which is one of the reasons why this movie has gotten even more popular.
