Main character of Bless Me, Ultima are placed in such environment and they have to deal with violent and fearful mob. During the war even remote parts in New Mexico were affected. Their sons and husbands were taken and sent to fight. This created a tense atmosphere in every community. At that time, there were racial and religious issues popping up here and there. In this atmosphere, Antonio grew up under influence of older lady named Ultima. She was traditional healer who used herbs and “magic”. As a young boy Antonio wanted to know everything and Ultima explained a lot to him in an interesting way, offering different perspective that was already lost even at that time.
