What is the movie Brazil about?
Set in a dystopian, Orwellian world marked by totalitarianism and bureaucracy, Terry Gilliam’s “Brazil” is a biting satire criticizing the modern industrial society. Initially poorly received by the audiences, it has grown to become a cult favorite and one of the most respected works of Gilliam, alumni of the Monty Python comedy troupe. Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is a low ranking government employee working a boring bureaucratic job. His dreams are haunted by the face of a beautiful woman whom he keeps rescuing. Through an unfortunate set of circumstances (including a fly stuck in Sam’s printer) a cobbler has been mistaken for a wanted terrorist and accidentally killed during questioning. Sam tries to somehow correct his error and visits the widow of the unfortunate victim. There he meets their neighbor Jill (Kim Greist) who has the face of the woman from Sam’s dreams. Her attempts to help the widow find out what has happened to her husband have landed Jill on the list of wanted terrorists. Sam meets Archibald Tuttle (Robert De Niro), the real terrorist the government was looking for, a free spirited former air conditioning repairman who becomes Sam’s ally. Sam orchestrates a job transfer in order to obtain access to Jill’s personal records. He marks her as deceased, hoping it would get the government off her tale. They later share a romantic night together, but are later arrested by the government forces for treason. Sam is rescued by Tuttle and his gang, and he later attends a funeral to meet with his mother. Shocked to see that his plastic surgery crazed mother now has the same face as Jill, he falls into an open casket and sinks further down into oblivion.
