Following the surprising success of “Night of the Living Dead”, George A. Romero got a slightly bigger budget and decided to expand his zombie apocalypse to a slightly wider scale, changing a rural farm for an urban shopping mall. Even though the events of both “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead” take place during the same outbreak of the mysterious plague, the former is not a sequel and involves no characters from its predecessor. The zombie plague has swept all across the US, and despite the governments best efforts to keep the situation under control the foundations of society are beginning to crack. Rural communities have had some success in dealing with the zombies, but the cities are overrun. An unlikely team made up of two SWAT members and two TV journalists steals a helicopter and finds shelter in a shopping mall. They barricade themselves inside and enjoy all the provisions at their disposal, but their comfy haven cannot stand for long, not with hordes of zombies and looters knocking on the door. After a while the group becomes restless and (not surprisingly) starts feeling trapped. They are forced to put their plan of escape on the fast track when their shelter is broken into, but even if they manage to find their way out of their current predicament, there’s no telling that anywhere in the world is safe anymore.
