The film tells a story of Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise's formative years, from their childhood to becoming British national treasures. The action takes place on the eve of World War Two. Ernie Wiseman is a very talented, precocious child performer. He starts his stage activity at a very influential at that times impresario Jack Parnell. A very persistent stage mum Sadie Bartholomew drags her son Eric, a bit reluctant eccentric dancer from audition to audition until he is also signed up at Hylton. The boys do not get along very well, but a wise mom knows what to do to solve this conflict. As the result of her efforts they form a bantering pairing called Morecambe and Wise. They become very popular on a stage and radio after their army service. However, their benefit performance on television turns into a disaster as they had to accept a script that would make their Northern humor closer to the Southern viewer. Being very frustrated, the participants of the duo split up. Sadie, however, didn’t give up on the idea of their successful television carrier, so she pushes Eric to contact Ernie. Old friends decide to reform on their own terms to become one of the best television bantering duos ever.
